Which Linux is Best?

Thinking about using linux but pondering about what version to choose? The bewildering array of options available in different flavors of linux can make this a daunting choice.

Here a very handy page which lists the top ten linux flavors, and offers suggestions as to which are suitable for beginners to advanced users. It even offers screenshots plus pros and cons of each type of linux. This is a real time saver.

Extract:

The bewildering choice and the ever increasing number of Linux distributions can be confusing for those who are new to Linux. This is why this page was created. It lists 10 Linux distributions (plus an honourable mention of FreeBSD, by far the most popular of all of the BSDs), which are generally considered as most widely-used by Linux users around the world. There are no figures to back it up and there are many other distributions that might suit your particular purpose better, but as a general rule, all of these are popular and have very active forums or mailing lists where you can ask questions if you get stuck. Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and MEPIS Linux are considered the easiest for new users who want to get productive in Linux as soon as possible without having to master all its complexities. On the other end of the spectrum, Slackware Linux, Gentoo Linux and FreeBSD are more advanced distributions that require plenty of learning before they can be used effectively. openSUSE, Fedora, Debian GNU/Linux and Mandriva Linux can be classified as good "middle-road" distributions. KNOPPIX is a live CD (or live DVD); originally very popular as a testing and demonstration tool, although nowadays most major distributions offer a live CD/DVD edition of their products as well. These distributions are loosely listed in order of popularity on DistroWatch, which is NOT an indication of their market share or quality.

Dan Crow, director of crawl systems at Google

There is a very interesting article about a talk given by Dan Crow, director of crawl systems at Google, which makes a very handy update about (some of) what really happens at Google.

Here is an extract about getting pages out of the dreaded supplemental pages category:

"Of course, someone just *had* to ask about supplemental results and what causes pages to be banished there. (This is one of the most common questions that I hear at all SEO/SEM conferences.) Dan provided us with some insights as to what the supplemental results were and how you could get your URLs out of them. He explained that basically the supplemental index is where they put pages that have low PageRank (the real kind) or ones that don’t change very often. These pages generally don’t show up in the search results unless there are not enough relevant pages in the main results to show. He had some good news to report: Google is starting to crawl the supplemental index more often, and soon the distinction between the main index and the supplemental index will be blurring. For now, to get your URLs back into the main results, he suggested more incoming links (of course!)."

Whether the information is new to you or not, it is good to have it confirmed from an authoritative source.

The full article is Getting Into Google By Jill Whalen

Ping list

This is an error-free ping list - I hope - I'll update it about every month or so.

Update: 26th July 2007.

Cheers,

William
---
You can either
a) enter the list of ping sits below into your blogger program, or
b) (if you are not sure about what you are doing) just use pingomatic to handle your pings. It will ping the top ones for you, but you need to enter the details manually. Here is a list of automatic ping sites (alternatives to pingomatic)..

I collected various lists, merged them, removed duplicates, removed similies to the same site and tested them. Hats off to elliot for a inital list which has rather suffered from lack of maintanance.

This a list of the ones which worked based on a much larger list from different sources:

Free disk recovery tool

A friend at work had a problem because his external hard disk was not being recognised by his computer. He tried all the usual big name recovery programs with no success. Then he came acrossTestDisk a free open source disk recovery tool and it did the trick.

"TestDisk is a powerful data recovery utility! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing your Partition Table)."

It rocks! My friend is delighted!

Try it if you have problems with a hard disk not booting. It is a bit 'techy' to use, but but maybe a techy friend can help you out if you feel daunted.

What is trackback?

Trackback is a mechanism for communication between blogs. if a blogger is writing a new entry which comments on, orrefers to an entry on another blog, then the commenting blogger can notify the other blog about this. This is known as a 'trackback ping'. The log receiving blog will typically display a list of links to all the commenting entries. You can often see these below the original entry.

Trackback allows a conversations spanning several blogs to be presented in a format which makes it easy to follow.

However, in order for this to work both blogging tools need to support the TrackBack protocol. Some bloggers switch off Trackback as it has created problems with 'trackback spam', which is a false trackback only intended to try and advertise something. Recent version of blogging software have got better at avoiding trackback spam, but the whole issue is still problematic.

Great way to get top internet marketing tips - free

Here is a really good way to get free internet marketing tips from the best experts around - all for free.: You just sign up for a free course or the newsletter from the top internet marketing experts and see what they do - then copy them...

Search on Google for:
internet marketing
web marketing

The ones who list first in the results are most likely to be amongst the best as they are appearing first for these highly competitive keywords - so they must know what they are doing, right?

Pick, say, the first three sites listed and go and join their newsletter / free course and watch what they do.

Don't just go along with what they say they do, notice what they actually do....

Notice where on the home page they have their email signup, notice what wording they use.
Notice what they say on their welcoming email.
Notice how soon they send follow ups and how often.

Can you see how they make their money?
Do they offer a free course and include affiliate links to products or links to products or services they sell? Do they use online video to sell their products and services?

Once you see a few of things you will get a flavour or the best approaches for selling via the web. You can then start to adapt their wording and their techniques to your needs.

If you want to be the best then learn from the best.

Hey, you might even want to sign up and pay them for something. But, by that time you'll have a much better idea about what is worth paying for.

Even if you are a webmaster and think you might want to install blogging software on your website these are still good places to start as they will help you get experience of what is involved with the minimum fuss and bother. Also even if you do later set up your own blog software you can use your blog on the external site to point back to the blog you are hosting yourself.

What is RSS (Really Simple Syndication)?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a way of exchanging information between web sites, and between web sites and individuals in a very dynamic way.

RSS is used by web sites to provide lists or 'feeds', as they are called, of regularly changing information.

For example, a web site my produce an RSS list of the top ten selling books which is updated daily. Any other web site could offer the same information to their sites vistors very easily using the RSS protocol. Every time the list of top selling ebooks is changed the visitors to any site offering the feed would see the new book list without the hosting webmaster having to edit or change it.

Individuals could use the feed in their 'feed reader' or 'aggregator' to see the latest book list at any time without having to visit the site.

Blogs also use RSS feeds to publish their content. This gives other sites an easy way to present the blogs information.

It is to a web sites advantage to have fresh and interesting content. When this can be acheived with little or no work on behalf of the webmaster it is especially appealing, so RSS has proven very successful.
